UVA Club History

The Myo Sim Karate and Self Defense Club was founded in 1966 by one of Mr. Hong's best students - Master Doug Marshall. He founded the Myo Sim Karate and Self Defense Club at UVA while attending medical school and studying as a blue belt under Mr. Hong in Arlington, VA. Mr. Marshall went on to become one of Mr. Hong's senior-most Master Instructors before he passed away in 1985. From the late 1960's through the late 1980's, Grand Master Hong would come down to Charlottesville by bus from Northern Virginia to teach a Myo Sim Karate and Kendo class for the UVA Club every Monday night. Master Fred Morton was the Head Instructor and backbone for the UVA Myo Sim Karate Classes and Club from the early 70's through the mid 80's. The Myo Sim Karate and Self Defense Club has been at the University of Virginia for 35 years and is one of the longest standing martial arts organizations in Charlottesville.
