The
following are basic rules to promote safe practice during classes.
1. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for people
behind you. Be careful when you walk behind some one. The sword
takes up a lot of space when some one swings it, and it is easy
to misjudge a safe distance.
2. Never wear jewelry in class. Rings and earings
are especially dangerous. Take jewelry off so it will not be damaged
and you will not be hurt.
3. Follow your instructor's directions. Do not
"experiment" or engage in horse play with swords.
4. Sparring is to be done ONLY under the supervision
of an instructor - never with katana swords.
5. Before a practice Katana can be used in class,
it must be approved by a black belt instructor.
6. Notify your instructor of any medical problems
(that interfere with practice) and STOP practice if the activity
seems injurious to you.
7. You should expect some injuries from practice.
This is a Martial Art and we practice with objects that can cause
injury. Most injuries will be bruises, small cuts and abrasions,
and sore muscles. In the many years I have practiced Kendo, no student
has ever received a serious injury. Let's keep it that way.
